I Follow the Sun: Sunflowers in Art 1889-2024

Works by Clara Gesang-Gottowt are included in I Follow the Sun: Sunflowers in Art 1889-2024, opening at Artipelag (Stockholm; SE) on 29 June 2024.

Few flowers have such a mythical role in the history of art as the sunflower. With Vincent van Gogh's still life from 1888–1889, known to the public like few other works, the subject gained iconic status. But the sunflower is present in art in far more ways than through van Gogh. Since the beginning of the 17th century, the sunflower has been a dense symbol and a dynamic motif for numerous artists - and is still so today in the diverse forms of contemporary art. In Follow the Sun, this rich art-historical tradition is approached, with a curiosity about which optional friendships and connections arise if you fix your gaze on how the sunflower has developed as a motif.
